European Flax-Linen Environmental Footprint Guide

March 20, 2026

The Alliance has published a landmark reference document on environmental assessment tailored to the flax sector, designed for all stakeholders - from growers to manufacturers, brands and retailers.

In response to evolving regulations and the strengthening of corporate sustainability strategies, the European flax sector now benefits from a strategic resource: the European Flax-Linen Environmental Footprint Guide.

A full guide to the environmental footprint of European flax

Designed to be accessible without prior expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the guide is intended for growers, processors, brands and retailers seeking to assess and communicate the environmental performance of products certified Masters of FLAX FIBRE™ and Masters of LINEN™.

Structured across five chapters, the publication covers the core principles of LCA, the business and regulatory drivers for engagement, ISO and PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodologies, sector-specific European data, as well as practical case studies and a comprehensive FAQ section.

The guide also charts the key milestones in the European flax sector’s environmental roadmap and its associated deliverables:

  • PEF-compliant LCA of scutched long flax fibre under the Masters of FLAX FIBRE™ (PEF v2.0, 2022).
  • Process mapping of European flax-linen production, enabling brands to identify value chain stages and initiate their own environmental assessments (2022).
  • Certified European fibre datasets integrated into three leading environmental databases: EF 3.1 (European reference), ecoinvent, and Higg Index (2023).
  • Datasets covering six processing stages and nine flax-specific intermediate products, developed to flax-linen with the forthcoming PEF 2025 methodology following four years of collaborative work across the sector and an independent critical review -details and access provided within the guide.
  • A dedicated digital calculation tool for Alliance members, co-developed with Glimpact - release in 2026, designed to streamline footprint calculations while ensuring the confidentiality of industrial data.

While the pace of regulatory developments and market expectations may at times appear uncertain, the direction is unequivocal: environmental footprint is becoming a prerequisite for market access and for meeting brand requirements.

Against the backdrop of increasing reporting obligations (CSRD Directive) and eco-design requirements (ESPR Regulation), achieving methodological alignment and co-developing robust datasets remain key challenges.
The Alliance is actively committed to addressing these issues and ensuring that the specific characteristics of flax are accurately represented, notably through its role as a voting member of the PEFCR for apparel (May 2025).

This guide reflects the Alliance’s commitment to clarifying these issues, providing shared tools, and offering tailored support to meet the needs of each stakeholder across the value chain.
