Jouez les Enfants: innovating through Hemp Textile to rethink fashion

April 13, 2026

As part of the Hemp for Circularity project, the Alliance commissioned the “Jouez les Enfants” fashion brand to create a look using textile hemp. Its two designers take us behind the scenes of the hemp outfit they made and share their vision of fashion.

Founded in 2018 in Amsterdam by Spike Spijker and Mies Splinter, Jouez les Enfants is a unisex brand that develops an approach centred on careful attention to materials, as well as a sense of exclusivity.

To create their designs, the founders select their fabrics with great care, offering one-off pieces or limited editions. They favour working with deadstock fabrics or materials sourced through local production. Their creative philosophy is rooted in material reuse and a long-term perspective.

With their hemp textile suit, they crystallise this vision. For them, it is not simply a matter of exploring a fibre with functional and environmental properties, but also of revealing its aesthetic potential in service of the garment.

This involves designing relevant fashion alternatives for their brand, questioning uses, and contributing to a fashion industry in transition.  Interview :

What is the intention behind your brand “Jouez les Enfants”?

We would say a committed brand.
It started with a simple idea: to create clothes we’d love to wear ourselves, timeless, honest, and made with care.

How would you define your creative approach today?

We’re very inspired by the 'laisser-aller' vibe.
Every piece we create starts with a feeling: the memory of a garment you used to put on and instantly felt effortless, cool, and completely yourself, that’s the essence of 'laisser-aller'.

We design for that feeling: timeless pieces you mix with ease and that grow with you. Style isn’t about perfection, it’s about how you feel in it.

What role do natural materials play in your creative process? What role do natural materials play in your creative process?

Ultimately, it’s a personal and aesthetic choice. We appreciate the look, feel, and behavior of natural fabrics, and how they develop character over time.

For us, it’s essential that clothing endures, not just because it’s better for the environment, but because it reflects a mindful, intentional way of living.

How did you approach hemp for the Hemp for Circularity project?

We were invited to collaborate on this project because our approach aligns perfectly with the values of Hemp for Circularity.
Working with it, we’ve found hemp to be an exceptionally versatile material for our suits, lightweight yet strong, with a naturally elegant appearance.

The sturdiness of hemp beautifully accentuates the shape of our suits, and we anticipate that our hemp suit will age gracefully over time.

Notes : the Alliance also presented the hemp textile creation signed Jouez les Enfants on its stand at the Première Vision trade show in Paris in February 2026.

Do you intend to continue exploring hemp in your upcoming collections?

We’d absolutely love to work more with hemp, it fits perfectly in our concept, and we’re confident our clients would embrace it.

As long as we don’t need to commit to purchasing thousands of meters upfront, hemp is a definite yes for us!
There’s so much to be done to transform the fashion industry, and we truly hope this step helps raise awareness and drive meaningful change.

Where can your brand be found?

While there are a few shops that carry Jouez les Enfants, wholesale isn’t our primary focus. We believe in a personal approach, which is why we mainly sell through our own studio and webshop.

By selling directly to our customers, we get to know them and that’s incredibly rewarding.
