Flax-Linen, a plant fibre that inspires creativity

02 October 2024

European flax-linen is made from a plant fibre and is firmly establishing itself in the interior design sector, from floors to ceilings, with its proven functional and technical properties (sound and heat insulation, lightness, specific rigidity, etc.) and its limited environmental footprint.

Used since ancient times, flax-linen is also an important natural fibre for the future, since it is a high-performance material that lends itself to creativity and inventiveness while meeting the challenges of sustainable transition. This versatile fibre easily and elegantly blends into any interior.

Three quarters of the world's fibre flax production comes from the West European coastal areas of France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Textile innovations in European Linen

Flax-linen's bold creativity expresses itself perfectly in the furnishings and decorations of up-market hotels.

For example, C&C Milano has designed new, pure flax-linen fabrics that deliver both natural beauty and distinctive aesthetics in sophisticated colours that are perfect for interiors.

"Gea" is an elegant flax-linen velvet fabric that is suitable for furniture and upholstery, its strong point being its durability over time. Carrara is a heavy flax-linen fabric that is perfectly suited for use in the design of different seating ranges. Equally, Diana is a lightweight flax-linen fabric that is ideal for designing curtains that blend subtly into living rooms.

100% bio-sourced, high-performance composite linen solutions

The company EcoTechnilin produces Kairlin® panels: a biosourced material made from flax or hemp fibres and 100% natural components, with high mechanical properties because it is both light and rigid.

This composite material is perfectly suited to the requirements of interior design and furniture, while at the same time having less impact on the environment because it can be recycled. It can also be used for signage (advertising displays, point-of-sale advertising, etc.).

The Bcomp company is developing the ampliTex™ range: this new generation of flax fibre reinforcements using different technologies makes it possible to obtain innovative solutions for various applications, particularly in the production of furniture parts.

The technical quality of this reinforcement (lightness and increased strength) is combined with the beauty of highlighting the natural fibre that is linen. ampliTex™ technical fabrics thus offer unique advantages in terms of durability and performance.
