Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance - Made in Situ: a dialogue between European Flax-Linen and Creativity

November 05, 2026

On display at the Mobilier National, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s exhibition *Made in Situ* showcases nearly seven years of research and creative work rooted in local regions, their resources and their traditional skills. This approach echoes the designer’s relationship with European linen.

Having moved to Portugal in 2017, the designer developed a creative process based on observing landscapes, meeting craftspeople and exploring materials. From wood to ceramics, cork and metal, each material becomes the starting point for a dialogue between a place, its practices and a creative vision.

Flax-Linen is part of this approach. Invited to present his work at an institution emblematic of the decorative arts and craft trades, the designer explains that the fibre has been part of his practice for several years.

The Made In Situ exhibition showcases seven collections created to date in Portugal and France, whose materials - wood, earth, metal, stone and wax - embody a whole world of encounters and local craftsmanship, closely linked to the landscapes and the people who shape them.

Although Flax-Linen has a discreet presence in Made in Situ, its inclusion is particularly meaningful in this setting. At the Galerie des Gobelins, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s contemporary creations engage in a dialogue with the heritage collections of the Mobilier national, bringing together perspectives on nature, materials and craftsmanship.

For the Alliance and its members, this presence offers an opportunity to raise awareness of European Flax-Linen among design professionals and creative audiences. It also demonstrates the value of incorporating the fibre into projects in which the material is not simply a covering, but an integral part of the creative process.

Being showcased within such a prestigious heritage institution helps bring the expertise of the European flax-linen industry closer to the world of contemporary design.

The Flax-Linen : A Familiar Material with Creative Potential

In an interview filmed at the opening of Made in Situ, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance describes Flax-Linen as a material with emotional, technical and technological dimensions. It evokes familiar memories, such as linen bed sheets and tablecloths, while also offering practical possibilities for design.

He explains his interest in working with flax fibre to develop fabrics and shapes that can cover objects while providing an additional function. This approach goes beyond purely decorative considerations: the material contributes to the design of the object itself and to how it is used.

To support this creative approach, the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp sourced the material made available to the designer from its member company Libeco. This collaboration illustrates the Alliance’s role in connecting designers with businesses across the industry and facilitating access to a European resource supported by specialised expertise.
